Isabela is the Most Populated Province in Cagayan Valley based on Reports

Cagayan Valley is a province adjacent to Ilocos Norte.  It lies North of Ilocos Norte and generally has a rugged terrain.

The following sections of this article deals with some population characteristics of Isabela:

Population growth rate at 2.25 percent

The total population of Isabela, as of May 1, 2000, was 1,287,575 persons. This implied an increase of 156,854 persons over the 1995 census figure or an average annual growth rate of 2.25 percent. This was 0.90 percentage point higher than the average growth rate recorded in 1995 (1.35 percent). A corresponding increase on the number of households was also registered, from 233,203 households in 1995 to 254,982 households in 2000. This resulted to an average household size of 5.05 persons, higher than the national average of five persons.

Ilagan, the provincial capital, the largest in terms of population

Among the 35 municipalities and two cities in Isabela, Ilagan, the capital of the province, was the largest in terms of population size with 119,990 persons or 9.32 percent of the total population of the province. This was followed by the City of Santiago (8.58 percent) and Cauayan (8.07 percent). All other municipalities had less than five percent each. Maconacon, the least populated municipality accounted for only 0.29 percent of the total population of the province.

Isabela, the most populated in Cagayan Valley

Isabela was the most populated among the five provinces in Cagayan Valley (Region II), comprising 45.7 percent of the 2.8 persons in the region. At the national level, the province contributed 1.7 percent to the total population of 76.5 million.

Median age of 20 years

Isabela had a median age of 20 years, the same as that of the 1995 figure. This meant that about half of the total population of the province were below 20 years old.

Sex ratio recorded at 105.4

For all ages, the sex ratio in Isabela was about 105 with 660,627 males and 626,948 females in the 2000 Census of Population and Housing (Census 2000). There were more males than females below 50 years old.

Close to three dependents for every four economically active persons

About 60 percent belonged to the economically active population (aged 15 to 64 years) while 37.66 percent were young dependents (aged 0 to 14 years) and less than four percent, old dependents (aged 65 years and over). The overall dependency ratio in 2000 was 70.31. This meant that for every 100 persons aged 15 to 64 years; there were about 66 young dependents and four old dependents, an improvement of 2.2 percentage points over the 1995 figure of 73.5.
