Are You a Gay or a Lesbian?

Are you a gay or a lesbian? If yes, then there is no reason for you to hide.  It has never been a good reason to be a “closet king” or a “closet queen”.   Come out in the open.  Gay and lesbian communities are growing in number and you might as well join these communities.

An example of these communities is a website (gay Romania) where gays and lesbians hold events like Gay Fest 2008, and even award the title Miss Travesti to the winner of the celebration.  I think it’s cool, really.

For some background on the behavior of gays and lesbians, aka homosexuals, homosexuality refers to sexual behavior or attraction between people of the same sex, or to a sexual orientation. As a sexual orientation, homosexuality refers to “an enduring pattern of or disposition to experience sexual, affectional, or romantic attractions primarily to” people of the same sex; “it also refers to an individual’s sense of personal and social identity based on those attractions, behaviors expressing them, and membership in a community of others who share them.”

While “sexual orientation ranges along a continuum from exclusively heterosexual to exclusively homosexual,” homosexuality is often contrasted with heterosexuality (primary or exclusive opposite-sex attraction) and bisexuality (a significant degree of attraction to both sexes).

Homosexuality is also distinguished from other aspects of sexuality, “including biological sex (the anatomical, physiological, and genetic characteristics associated with being male or female), gender identity (the psychological sense of being male or female), and social gender role (adherence to cultural norms defining feminine and masculine behavior).”

Etymologically, the word homosexual is a Greek and Latin hybrid with homos (often confused with the later Latin meaning of “man”, as in Homo sapiens) deriving from the Greek word for same, thus connoting sexual acts and affections between members of the same sex, including lesbianism. In a narrow sense, gay refers to male homosexuality, but it often is used in its broadest sense, especially in media headlines and reports, to refer to homosexuality in general. Lesbian, however, always denotes female homosexuality.

Homosexual behavior occurs among numerous non-human animals and particularly among social animals.
