Salazar Takes Position From Aquino as Mayor of Piddig
Ilocos Norte Politics Update: Politics here in Ilocos Norte has always been hot since the time of Ferdinand Marcos.
Local news here as of late indicate that the new town mayor of Piddig, Ilocos Norte formally assumed his post Thursday morning after the Supreme Court issued an order instructing the former local chief executive to vacate the position.
Augustus Salazar, took office following the high court’s writ of execution against former mayor Generoso Aquino Jr.
The Court had released a writ of execution ordering Aquino to vacate his post two weeks ago.
Prior to Salazar’s assumption to the post, the town was filled with tension for two weeks following the issuance of the order.
Hundreds of Aquino’s supporters barricaded the municipal hall’s gates to block Salazar from going inside.
Earlier, Aquino decided to vacate the post after Gov. Michael Keon asked him to respect the Court’s decision.
Salazar, who lost 71 votes his rival in the 2007 local polls, filed a protest before the Commission on Elections on May 22, 2007, six days after Aquino was proclaimed.
In his petition, Salazar claimed that the 60 votes added to Aquino were taken from him. He also asked the commission to nullify Aquino’s proclamation and correct the alleged errors on the tally of votes.
