Duplicate Plate Problem at the LTO
My owner-type jeep has a plate number ACA-497. It’s scheduled for registration at the Land Transportation Office (LTO) in Laoag City in July. My borther-in-law, sister, son-in-law (nephew-in-law, actually) and our twin boys went to LTO on the second week of July to renew the registrations of our motor vehicles ending in 7 (July schedule) and everything seemed ok.
After giving PhP 6,200 to a “friend” who will take care of the documents, I thought I will just have to wait for the processed documents. I was dead wrong. LTO document processors said that my plate number has a duplicate, meaning another motor vehicle owner owns the same plate.
I was furious because the LTO has long been automated/computerized. Why only now that they will claim such duplicate plate issues. How on earth has the former owner of my vehicle able to renew its registration for 19 years (with the exception of 2007-2008 registration because I failed to renew the registration that last year)?
Now, this is a big issue. I have to go to the former owner later today to ask him how did he do it. If his explanation won’t be clear to me, I will return the owner-type jeep and ask for my money back.
